FIRST IMPRESSIONS: TAG Heuer Aquaracer Solargraphs

TAG Heuer continue to roll out their Aquaracer Solargraphs with two new pieces, a dusky pink 34mm and an 'Ice Blue' 40mm. You may remember that TAG Heuer released an 'Ice Blue' quartz chronograph a couple of years ago (actually I thought they had been discontinued, but the mid-blue and ice blue versions are still available on the TH website; oddly it was the silver and black dial models that were deleted) and this looks like the sun-powered, three handed version of that.

From the pictures we've seen so far though, this looks like it might be the first coloured-dial Solargraph that actually looks better than it's non-solar equivalent. The chronograph had a definite lilac edge to it in person, whereas this looks like more of a pure blue. I hope so anyway, I guess we'll have to wait until it hits the stores to be sure.

I think the dial works well with the titanium case, but one thing I'm not so sure about here is the pale blue second hand. I know it's the Solargraph's calling card, but there are already plenty of Solargraphs without it now and I can't help thinking that a polished hand would have worked better.

The pink I'm less enthusiastic about to be honest. I've seen an actual photo of this one and it has a bit of that grainy texture to it that the 'Polar Blue' 34mm Solargraph has and I'm not sure I like it. It looks a little bit like it's made of recycled material, and since this is a luxury watch that's not really a complement. Yes, recycling is all the rage and I'm sure if every 1" square of dial was made of recycled material then we'd surely save the planet... but. no. Sorry, it just looks a bit off to me.

And I still hate that Godawful bezel.

Okay, let's see what the esteemed Council have to say about these today...

Blue 5.5/10, Pink 3/10: "Quite a nice blue Solargraph. Still don't think these look "luxury", though. At least the diamonds sort of go with pink."

Blue 8/10, Pink 5/10: "I’m curious about the 40mm! My first impressions are 8/10 for the 40mm and 5/10 for the 36mm. I’m sick of diamonds and I hate pink dials. I’d love to check out the 40mm in person."

Blue 7.5/10, Pink 7/10: "Even though there are diamonds on the pink dial I think the blue is more striking."

Blue 7/10, Pink 4/10: "Blue looks to match my jeans, it’s ok. Pink and diamonds, nope."

Blue 8/10, Pink 4/10: "Ice blue: The right size, right model and a beautiful color. Assuming that this color also appears that way in real life. Pinky: For a watch with diamonds, not bad. 'grainy' dial goes well with the stones."

Blue 6/10, Pink 4/10: "I think that the number of colour variations will continue to increase in the future, but I think that it will be quite boring, so I would like TAG Heuer to try something interesting, such as limited production in this colour this year, and a slightly more flashy colour."

Blue 6.5/10, Pink 4/10: "Diamonds 😏"

Blue 6/10, Pink 6/10: "Neither moves the needle, but they're both mildly pleasant."

Blue 7.5/10, Pink 9/10: "I’ll give the blue dial a 7.5 — it’s nice, but I like the black dial better. The wife gives the pink dial watch a 9 — she really likes the pink and the diamonds."

Blue 7/10, Pink 7/10: "Lately I find myself attracted to blue watches..."

Blue 6/10: "This one has an attractive colour combination. Although I think this line could use something a bit more daring to compete."

Blue 7/10, Pink 5.5/10: "Both look reasonable in the renders, but the coloured dials on Solargraph models are often worse than the renders. Fingers crossed that these prove that wrong."
