OWNED: TAG Heuer Aquaracer 'Chronotimer' Quartz Chronograph

CAF1010.BA0821

Hard to believe but I've now had my CAF1010 'Chronotimer' for six years. I wouldn't say it only seems like yesterday that I drove to Sheffield to pick it up, but I still remember the experience quite vividly and I particularly remember driving home down the M1 and being distracted by the sunlight reflecting off the polished hour markers, hands and the digital display frame.

The watch was purchased pre-owned from 'Parkers' and came with a slightly tatty but complete set of boxes. along with the booklet, warranty card and a service card from TAG Heuer and a bracelet that was just long enough for my 7.1/2" wrist. I originally found the watch listed on Ebay for £995 but later found the watch on Parkers own website for £945 (due to them not having to pay eBay fees).

FEATURE: The Joy of Switching Out Straps

Visit any watch forum and you will always find a thread where people are discussing which straps they are wearing on their watches, where they came from, how much they cost and which exotic animals were killed in the process. No word of a lie, someone on the THF Forum has watch straps made of giraffe and hippo leather - I can't even with that. But who am I to cast aspersions, do I not own a pair of brightly coloured sharkskin straps for my 4000 Series? Why yes I do... and here they are.

FEATURE: The Trials and Tribulations of Luxury Swiss Watch Ownership

Just before Christmas I took delivery of my long desired Grand Carrera Chronograph, but after a few weeks of blissful ownership something went wrong. When I originally received the watch it had performed incredibly well, staying within 1 second a day, but suddenly it was gaining 30 secs in a day, then losing 15 seconds in a day, then losing 7 seconds and then kinda staying there or thereabouts. Thankfully I had bought the watch from Watchfinder who give a two year warranty and so back it went.

At around the same time I noticed that the chronograph was doing something weird. Now I don't generally use my chronographs very much to be honest, and so I couldn't be sure if this was a new development or whether the watch had behaved this way since it arrived. But I mentioned this in my covering letter and sent it back to them in the return pack provided.

INSTRUCTIONS: TAG Heuer F1 Kirium and Aquaracer Chronotimer

        F1 Kirium                                 Aquaracer 'Chronotimer'

If you own either a TAG Heuer F1 Kirium or a TAG Heuer Aquaracer 'Chronotimer' but don't have an instruction booklet then you might be a bit lost. Both these watches use the same movement (the multifunction ETA E20.321) and here below I bring you the instruction booklet for these and probably many other watches.

I know this isn't a very exciting post if you don't own one of these watches, but every time I post a set of instructions for a complicated watch I get at least one person thanking me so it's worth it.

FEATURE: My Top 5 Yellow Dial TAG Heuer Watches

CAF101D.FT8011

If you notice, at the top of the page there is a tab marked 'Direct Searches for the TAG Heuer Enthusiast Gallery Blog', this is an 'ongoing' project that has been made infinitely more difficult thanks to Google redesigning the blogging platform so that accessing posts from the dim and distant past via the back door is almost impossible. Never the less, I am still working away at relabelling every post with the case material and dial colour and I will get there eventually.

I can tell you that all the Monacos have been relabelled now and as of me writing this post, all the yellow dial watches have been relabelled too!

Of course the idea is that finding all the yellow dial watches to write this post would simply be a case of clicking on this link:

And of course it does work now... it's just been arrived at the wrong way round.

Thanks to Google and their pointless meddling! 😡

Anyhoo... personal blogging gripes aside, let's turn to the task in hand shall we? Namely, picking my top five yellow dial TAG Heuer watches, that should be fun right?

Aaaaaaaah, well... not so much. You see, one glance at the page linked above will quickly reveal that there are in fact only six different watches to choose from, it's just that five of them are available on either a black rubber strap or a steel bracelet. And of those, well... two are monumentally unsatisfactory, while a third is merely, ummm... not so good.

So really, this is a 'Top 3' with the addition of the two 'least worst' of the remaining three watches.

Just so you know.

I mean, Heaven forbid someone reads this article and thinks that I actually chose numbers four and five from a varied pool of options. I know my taste is often questionable but even I have to draw the line somewhere!

Let's get into it...

#5 AQUARACER (WAF1012.FT8010)
(Stuart Minion Special Edition)

First of all, whatever your feelings about rubber straps, I personally think that if you're having a yellow dial then a black rubber strap is the best option. It just looks 'better' to me, and so to give these watches the best possible presentation I have chosen pictures where the watch is on a black rubber strap..

Even so, this watch is clearly not winning any awards for beauty. It narrowly avoids the gong for 'worst dressed' only because this small seconds version lacks the subdials found on the CAF101D above, and I have to say - this picture flatters this watch no end. I have seen this watch in the Bicester Village outlet and it is spectacularly ugly. The yellow is much paler in person and to be honest I was almost sick in my mouth.

I know they have used this small seconds design before on different watches, and I don't have a problem with it per-se, but against this yellow background it can't avoid looking like a stupid, grinning mouth... and for me that is a problem.

So, number five it may be here, but this is still one to avoid at all costs!

#4. AQUARACER (CAF1011.BA0821)
(Breitling Aerospace Homage)

I know I said that all these watches look better on a black rubber strap, but actually with this particular one that's debatable for some reason... and that reason may well be that on a bracelet this might just possibly pass for a Breitling Aerospace.

This is a watch I actually own, albeit not in this dial variant. No, I did contemplate buying this one in yellow, but thankfully I came to my senses and purchased it in black instead, which looks infinitely better in my opinion. This is just... bizarre. But it's one of those where you look at it sometimes and you think 'Okay, it's actually not so bad', but then two minutes later you think 'No, it's horrific!'.

On the black dial variant of course, those oddly shaped and positioned digital screens blend with the background and the only part that's clearly visible is the chrome edged oblong at the bottom of the dial. But here we have a black 'rainbow' across the top half of the dial and a square date window that's too close to the chrome surround (which for some reason often seems to fall off on the yellow dial version...).

I mean, if you own this watch, you may well love it, and if I had bought it I might well love it too... I'm just glad I didn't.

#3. FORMULA 1 (382.513)

Finally a watch I can really get behind and one that I personally own. This yellow dial Formula 1 is a whole lot of fun and with the silver detailing around the edge of the dial it stands out as perhaps my favourite of all the 'classic' Formula 1 dials. It's a pity they didn't make this with a black bezel and strap* (the black/yellow version is reversed with a black dial), but even so it works well with the grey.

Best of all you can pick these up in great condition for less than £200 if you know where to look (Japan), but just remember these watches are rather small by modern standards.

*You can see a yellow/black F1 by clicking HERE, this was not an official model, but someone has clearly fitted a black strap and bezel to a 382.513, on reflection I think the official black/yellow version is better...

#2. FORMULA 1 (CA1213)

The only watch on this list that I haven't actually seen in person, albeit I did briefly own a similar watch with a white dial. Again, I know I said these watches look better on black rubber straps, but the black rubber strap that this one comes on is a little bit odd (and I was really talking about the Aquaracers anyway) so here it is on the bracelet.

These second generation colourful dial Formula 1 chronographs hold their value well, I can't actually find one for sale right now, but I know when I was considering one a couple of years ago they were upwards of £750. Too much for me when white dial models were half the price, although I ended up selling mine anyway, and losing on it - so that was smart!

#1 AQUARACER (CAF7013.FT8011)

Was there ever any doubt what would be my number one choice for this post? This one is not just my favourite yellow dial TAG Heuer by a country mile, it's also one of my favourite watches period. This one looks good on the steel bracelet, but for me the black rubber strap lifts it even more and works so well because it plays off the (stationary) black part of the rotating bezel.

This one also features the amazing 'Calibre S' movement which is a delight to play with and, though you won't notice it at first sight, the dial is actually decorated with very fine concentric circles in orange (to match the tip of the second hand and the subdial hands). Sure, not everyone likes the way the subdials are displayed, and I can accept that... but crucially they don't make a smiley face and on the wrist this one really works. The lume is excellent too and the fitted, branded rubber strap is well worth the money.

I can't recommend this one highly enough and if you can't stomach the yellow dial you can also get it in black or blue (and silver too, if you absolutely must).

So there we are, my 'Top 5' yellow dial TAG Heuer watches... no wait, I can't leave this without addressing the elephant in the room.

CAF101D.FT8011

Honestly, what where they thinking? Rarely have I come across a watch as unappealing as the CAF101D Aquaracer, even on a black rubber strap... and all the worse perhaps because it has so much in common with the magnificent CAF7013. I mean, how do you screw a watch dial up so badly from such a good starting point?

I don't know, maybe you like your watch to look like it has an idiotic smiling face on the dial? Some people like Konstantin Chaykin's 'Joker' watch after all... not me, for sure, and while the colour does accentuate the problem slightly, to be honest it's not exactly a 'looker' in blue either.

CAF101C.BA0821

Can we also talk about the ham-fisted application of the 'Grand Date', usually a complication that brings gravitas and style to a watch dial, but no... not this time. Here it looks like it was conceived by a blind man, out of his mind on Absinthe and armed only with a chisel. I mean what is going on with that bizarre, curved surround? I guess we should be thankful that it's less visible on the yellow version... on this blue dial it looks even more perplexingly terrible!

On top of that it's massively cluttered, and the yellow dial lacks the vibrancy of the CAF7013 (apparently those orange circles really do make all the difference), in short it's a mess of a watch and easily the worst yellow dial watch TAG Heuer have ever made, if not one of the ugliest dials ever made period.

CAZ101AC.BA0842

I knew there wasn't a huge selection of yellow dial TAG Heuer watches, but I thought there was more than six. It seems a shame there hasn't been one in the range for quite a few years now, but maybe yellow is best left as an accent colour, like on the current 'carbon dial' CAZ101AC?

Yellow dials are fun, but I don't think many people would want their only watch to have a yellow dial, it's more an occasional thing, at least it is for me anyway.

FEATURE: 2018 - My Crazy Year of Watch Buying!

It seems slightly ridiculous now, but just 12 months ago my watch collection consisted of just 6 pieces. My F1 Kirium (bought in 2004), Aquagraph (2013), Carrera Heuer 01 (2016), Formula 1 Quartz (2016), Microtimer (2017) and my Formula 1 Calibre 16 (2017). Along the way I had bought a couple of 2000s (in 2015) and then sold them in 2016.

2018 was indeed a crazy watch buying year for me and it started in February at Bicester Village.

01. TAG Heuer Aquaracer Swiss Limited Edition (Ladies)

WAF141X.BA0824

2018 was our 25th Wedding Anniversary year and I'd been saving for 18 months for our planned trip to Geneva, we still went to Geneva... but I bought this watch for my wife for an anniversary present. It literally says 'Geneva' on the dial so every time she wears it she will remember our amazing holiday and our visit to the TAG Heuer factory. Unfortunately for her our anniversary is in October so she had a long wait!

http://tagheuerenthusiast.blogspot.com/2018/03/buying-experience-tag-heuer-aquaracer.html

02. TAG Heuer 6000 Series Quartz

WH1115-K1

So then my first purchase of 2018 was an eBay bargain. I paid £300 for a blue dial quartz 6000 in very good condition with a perfect bracelet, the only slight niggle being some wear to the lume on the hands. I really enjoy wearing this watch, it's affordable enough that you don't have to be totally paranoid the whole time you're wearing it and it looks much more expensive than it is.

03. TAG Heuer Aquaracer Chronotimer

CAF1010.BA0821

As I went into 2018 I started the year by picking up a Chronotimer from Parkers in Sheffield for £950, it was quite a fun morning driving up there on a cold March morning and as the watch fitted me perfectly I wore it on the drive home... and tried not to drive into the back of the car in front every time the light caught the polished markers and hands. :)

https://tagheuerenthusiast.blogspot.com/2018/03/buying-experience-aquaracer-chronotimer.html

04. TAG Heuer Aquaracer Calibre S

CAF7013.BA0815

This was a watch I'd had my eye on for some time, and nearly bought the previous year but (foolishly) got distracted by and bought the Calibre 16 Formula 1 instead. I went looking for this and found it on the Watchfinder site, where coincidentally they were running a 'Make Us an Offer' sale. The watch was up for £1275 and I secured it for £1150. I picked it up from their Avery Row store in London and have loved it ever since.

http://tagheuerenthusiast.blogspot.com/2018/03/buying-experience-aquaracer-calibre-s.html

05. TAG Heuer Link Lady Chinese Limited Edition (Ladies)

WAT1418.BA0954

Technically I didn't buy this one, I visited Bicester Village with my wife and she fell in love with the purple dial. This one is a Chinese Limited Edition of which Bicester had just two pieces. It was a hell of a job finding anything out about this one at all, funny thing is my wife always sad she never liked Roman numerals on watches...

http://tagheuerenthusiast.blogspot.com/2018/04/buying-experience-tag-heuer-lady-link.html

06. TAG Heuer Grand Carrera Calibre 8 GMT

WAV5111.BA0901

The time came to offload my orange and black CAU2012 Formula 1 Calibre 16 and as I've recently recounted, I ended up trading it in with Watchfinder. Not the best move I made this year, but I can't blame Watchfinder for my bad choices!

http://tagheuerenthusiast.blogspot.com/2018/05/buying-experience-grand-carrera-calibre.html

07. TAG Heuer Aqaracer Quartz 500M

WAJ1111.BA0870

My next purchase came in May and was my first (and to date only) experience of dealing with 'The Watch Village'. I really love this watch, it is one of my absolute favourites, but dealing with 'The Watch Village' was frustrating to say the least.

http://tagheuerenthusiast.blogspot.com/2018/05/buying-experience-grand-carrera-calibre.html

08. TAG Heuer Alter Ego (Ladies)

WAA1412.BA0760

Again, this was another of my wife's purchases, but since I was heavily involved (i.e. I drove her up to Wakefield to buy it from Cash Converters) I shall include it here. Having a wife who likes watches definitely makes things easier, although I haven't got her properly trained yet whereby she still makes the occasional comment about 'not needing any more watches'. It's an ongoing process I guess... :)

http://tagheuerenthusiast.blogspot.com/2018/07/buying-experience-tag-heuer-alter-ego.html

09. TAG Heuer Kirium Quartz Chronograph

CL1112.BA0701

Next up came my second Kirium, and one that I feel I definitely overpaid for a bit. This one cost me £400, which seemed fair at the time given the alternatives I could find, but the condition is a little weak. The clasp is a bit worn, there's some small bits of damage to the bracelet (and it has been repaired although I didn't notice that for some time), I think there's a collar missing where the clasp attaches to the bracelet so it wiggles around when the clasp is open, and the bezel is a bit scratched. Still, the dial is a gorgeous colour, and it all works as it should.

http://tagheuerenthusiast.blogspot.com/2018/08/buying-experience-tag-heuer-kirium.html

10. TAG Heuer 2000 Exclusive Quartz Two-Tone

WN1153.BD0341

I honestly never thought I'd buy a gold or two-tone watch, but then I came across this in a pawn shop near where I work. It took me a little while to decide about this one and when I went back to buy it it was heavily reduced, so that was a bit of bonus!

http://tagheuerenthusiast.blogspot.com/2018/09/buying-experience-tag-heuer-2000.html

11. TAG Heuer Formula 1 Quartz

383.513/1

A long held goal was achieved when I finally got myself a classic, resin cased 1980s Formula 1. It's smaller than I'd like at 35mm, but doesn't wear too bad on the wrist. Admittedly I'd have liked one of the red and black ones, but this is still pretty cool. The only thing was I had to hand it over to my wife so that she could give it me for Christmas.

https://tagheuerenthusiast.blogspot.com/2018/10/buying-experience-tag-heuer-classic.html

12. TAG Heuer S/EL Quartz

S95.713C

You know that saying, 'if it's good to be true...', well this was too good to be true. I bought this very quickly and luckily managed to sell it again without losing too much money. The seller did not state a size and I found it on another site which falsely stated it was 38mm, this is what happens when you find an item on eBay with just a few minutes to go until the listing ends.

13. TAG Heuer S/EL Quartz Chronograph Two-Tone

CG1120-0

I tried really hard to buy a black dial steel S/EL but in the end the deal came to nothing, and in the meantime I went back to this two-tone S/EL that I was looking at beforehand. I really like this watch, but I still want to get a black dial chrono S/EL at some point as well. We're up to November now, but still there's more...

https://tagheuerenthusiast.blogspot.com/2018/11/buying-experience-tag-heuer-sel-quartz_15.html

14. TAG Heuer 3000 Series Quartz Two-Tone

934.206

It took a long time, but I finally got my hands on a 3000 Series! I wasn't expecting to buy another two-tone, but this one was too good to pass up. Listed on eBay at £475, I offered just £275 and ws rather surprised when my offer was accepted. I really love this watch and I can't see me ever parting with this one, even though it's one of the cheapest TAG Heuer's I own.

https://tagheuerenthusiast.blogspot.com/2018/12/buying-experience-tag-heuer-3000-series.html

15. TAG Heuer 4000 Series Quartz

WF1111-0

This, the 3000 and the 6000 Chrono were all bought at the same time and on reflection that was probably a bad move. I like this one, but it's not terribly exciting if I'm honest. The bezel doesn't move, the green paint has come off and the lume has perished a bit so it's something of a phantom watch now in some lights... but still it wasn't too expensive and the bracelet is actually in excellent condition (unlike some I've seen).

https://tagheuerenthusiast.blogspot.com/2018/12/buying-experience-tag-heuer-4000-series.html

16. TAG Heuer 6000 Series Quartz Chronograph

CH1110.BA0675

This is an odd one, I still haven't made my mind up about this one... it's in excellent condition, but I'm finding it hard to warm to somehow. It didn't help that I had to send it back to be sorted out as soon as I got it, which kinda put a question mark over it's head straight away. Oddly I find my feelings about it can change by the hour, so I think I'm just going to have to wait and see how this one plays out...

https://tagheuerenthusiast.blogspot.com/2018/12/buying-experience-tag-heuer-6000-series.html

Well there we are, my crazy year of watch buying... and even though I've already bought a couple of watches this year, I can't really see 2019 playing out the same way. For a start I've covered a lot of bases now, and if I do buy watches I can see where I might buy one and sell one rather than just keep adding to the numbers. I'm also toying with the idea of saving up and getting myself something decent for my birthday in October, so that might slow me down a bit, but I guess we'll have to wait and see!
