Three new 36mm Calibre 5 Aquaracers for you today, and while I wouldn't dream of labelling them 'ladies' watches, they definitely tend to fall into that general category due to sizing, diamond hour markers and general colour choices. I must admit when I first saw them the one that caught my eye was the purple dial, but the more I look at it the more I'm unsure how successful it actually is. I applaud TAG Heuer for embracing a new colour in this range and maybe it looks fantastic in person, but as of right now I'm definitely on the fence.
You might remember that a couple of years ago TAG Heuer made a limited edition 36mm Aquaracer for tennis star Naomi Osaka; that one had a similar dial (perhaps a little more green and a little less pistachio) and came on a dark green rubber strap. It was a bit all over the place but on the whole it worked, this one however I don't really like very much if I'm honest. I'm a bit sick of green in any shade honestly and this just isn't very appealing to my eyes, it just looks a bit wishy washy on a dive watch*.
(*Or even an outdoor-explorer-kinda watch as the 200M Aquaracer is supposedly these days...)
Which leaves the blue dégradé dial as perhaps the most interesting of the three and the one that has scored the highest with the council. Real world photographs have me scratching my head a little bit; sure the white rubber strap is not going to float everyone's boat (albeit I quite like it), but it's easily replaceable with a bracelet and I can imagine this being the easiest one to actually sell... I wouldn't be surprised if TAG have manufactured more of these than the other two, and I wonder what other dials we can expect to come with this new dial style - almost certainly 'green' I imagine!
I do like that they have colour coded the bezels on the green and purple models, that's a nice touch and I think my wife will like the purple in person, but I already know it will be way too big and chunky for her wrist and way too small for mine, so it's not really any use to either of us!
As to pricing, well the purple and green models on the bracelets cost £3600, while the blue dial on the white rubber strap costs £3450.
Okay, well dials aside, there's not too much to say about these so lets turn them over to our friends in the 'Council of Considered Opinion' and see what they have to say about them (not that much it turns out... well, women's watches innit?).
Purple 7/10, Green 5/10, Blue 8.5/10: "I love the textured design of the dial but the dégradé blue is my favourite of the three. The green one is a bit weird looking... "
Purple 8.5/10, Green 8/10, Blue 8.5/10: "Having viewed in TAG’s website, these are very cool, so giving them joint top score for the year so far. Blue being the best dial, but not so keen on white rubber, Purple next best dial and great on bracelet, so 8.5’s there. Green gets a drop to 8, but still cool."
Purple 7.5/10, Green 6.5/10, Blue 5/10: "Overall, nice looking Aquaracers. Purple is the star of the show IMHO."
Purple 5/10, Green 4/10, Blue 6.5/10: "Diamonds again… 😏"
Purple 7/10, Green 6/10, Blue 8/10: "The purple dial looks lovely. The blue looks stunning with that bluey/green gradient dial. May reserve judgement until I actually see it in the wild though. As for the green... it looks like they are cashing in on the pistachio trend going around. It's lovely but just not as exciting as the others."
Purple 7.5/10, Green 6.5/10, Blue 7/10: "Not my thing, but I can appreciate them."
Purple 5/10, Green 4/10, Blue 7/10: "The blue is nice and summery, but I would like to see it sold as a set with a bracelet so that it can be used on a daily basis. Since TAG Heuer is raising the price, that much service should be possible."
Purple 3/10, Green 3/10, Blue 3/10: "Diamonds, Strange colours, 3/10 across the board. Regardless of price."
Purple 4/10, Green 4/10, Blue 5/10: "Blue is best but the diamonds… and the white strap 😖 ick"
