HISTORY: Heuer/TAG Heuer 2000 Series (1982-2004)

It seems to me that one could quite convincingly argue that the 2000 Series launched in 1982 is the 'quintessential' TAG Heuer timepiece. Yes of course, others would argue for the Carrera, Monaco and even the S/EL-Link, but really when we think of something truly 'representative' can the 2000 Series truly be discounted?

Not only did it survive in the range for 22 years straight, in reality it continues in the modern day as the Aquaracer. Indeed were it not for a name change in the mid 2000s we'd be talking about celebrating 40 years of the 2000 Series this year.... I wonder how TAG Heuer would have celebrated that? Or if indeed they would have bothered, since it isn't considered a 'Heritage' range?

It must be said though that the 2000 had a slightly shaky start with some bizarre looking pieces with what look like ball bearings stuck into the bezel and the legend 'Heuer 2000' printed in best 'future Sci-fi style' font too... hmm!

Indeed the 2000 Series took a little while to really settle, with some 'interesting' dead ends along the way ('Tristar' anyone?). But once they hit on the winning formula, they stuck pretty close to it and even today these 'everyday' TAG Heuer models still look great and good ones hold their value pretty well too. Good luck finding a red dial 2000 Series for under £700....

Okay, let's delve in to the History of the 2000... this is gonna be a long one!

NB: This post does not include the 2000 Exclusive range which has already been covered in its own separate post:

1982 CATALOGUE

The 2000 launched with a reasonable selection of pieces, including those aforementioned shockers with the ball bearing bezels. I can honestly say I have never seen one of those for sale... which is a shame because they are so eye catching with those mustard yellow straps!

These last two are probably a bit controversial since at face value they don't appear to fit into the 2000 family, however they were clearly marked as 2000 Quartz in the catalogue and they also have the text '2000' on the dial so there isn't really much room for argument!

1984 CATALOGUE

Perhaps unsurprisingly after that smorgasbord of new pieces, nothing new was shown in the 1984 catalogue.

1985 CATALOGUE

This was the last catalogue before the company was bought out, so while the images I have found show TAG Heuer logos on the dial, all of these pieces originally had 'Heuer' dials.

972.608 (WE1413): Ladies, blue dial, blue alum insert, steel bezel, case and bracelet
972.615 (WE1313): Boy's, blue dial, blue alum insert, steel bezel, case and bracelet

1987 CATALOGUE

The 1987 catalogue was the first since the TAG takeover in 1985, the 2000 Series remained largely unchanged but the company did launch a new variation on the 2000 model called the 'Tri-Star'.

1988 CATALOGUE

The 1988 catalogue featured no previously unseen models within it's pages...

1988/1989 CATALOGUE

Again, not a lot going on in the 2000 range, but they did release these rather Breitling-esque looking chronographs. One of these came up on on Est1897 a few weeks ago at a good price, but someone bought it before I made my mind up, of course I regret that now!

575.406 (CE1121): Men's, yellow dial, white insert, gold bezel, two tone case and bracelet
840.306 (CE2114): Men's, black/silver dial, steel bezel, case and bracelet

1994/1995 SELECTION CATALOGUE

The 2000 Series isn't a range which throws up too much in the way of surprises, at least not after its initial flourishes and experiments, so it's more of the same really...

2002/2003 + 2004 CATALOGUE

OTHER WATCHES

Just a couple more pieces that have come to my attention, the first is the watch which was presented to the drivers who participated in the 75th Indy 500 in 1991, and the second is one sent to me by Yuki (24Snowy24) which is a quartz 2000 with 'Kool' branding on the dial (not sure what that is to be honest).

  1. Have to say I never really like the 2000 series.
It's a bit too 'blingy' for my tastes, and I always feel like the 2000 series was akin to a 1000 series with added tassles and features to appeal to those of a 'showy' disposition (but without the cash for a truly showy wristpiece).
They're the FocusRSi of the TAG range with extra wings, spoilers, skirts, beancan exhaust and fancy wheels, but no actual performance upgrades. (imho)

  5. Such a great guide. "Kool" is a major menthol cigarette brand and in the 90's was a major sponsor of Indy motor racing. Like Japanese tobacco company Mild Seven's sponsorship of Formula 1's Benetton team, Kool was another major tobacco company that was heavily involved in motorsports at the same time as TAG.

  6. Hi, thank you for providing this really excellent information. I have been looking at two watches for sale which are very similar and I wonder if you can shed some light on the origins. One has WE1210-R marked on the back of the case and has raised lume bars for numerals with an ss surround like a modern sub. The other has 962.013-2 on the back with the lumenstaright in the dial like the pic above. Can you tell me about the former of these and where it fits in to the timeline and your thoughts on its rarity compared to the latter? Many thanks again for your great work

    1. Hi, thanks for visiting the blog. The 'R' and the '02' signify something has changed in the design. It's always hard to know what that is, it could be internal or it could be a minor change to the dial. The 962.013 indicates it was made before 1991 as the part numbers changed around there. If it has TAG Heuer on the dial it was made after 1986, if it has Heuer on the dial then it is pre 1986. The WE1210-R will have TH on the dial and will be made after 1991. Unfortunately TH were a bit... well, let's say they changed things on a whim back then. I'm not sure when they changed the batons from printed to applied, but it's possible it could have been when they changed from tritium lume to superluminova. This potentially could be what the R indicates. Unfortunately details pre 1999 are always a bit sketchy as back then these were just (expensive) watches to be worn not something really cared too much about as far as details. Now you don't really get 'continuous improvement' like you did back then because brands just refresh watches by issuing them with new part numbers. Finally I feel it's worth pointing out that both of these watches are mid sized, so unless you have a small wrist you might want to think about a WE1110 instead? I think my first watch (from eBay) was a WE1210 and when it arrived I was shocked how small it was.

  7. Hi Rob, thank you so much for your detailed response. The watch is for my son as an extra surprise on turning 14. His big brother got an f1 WA1214 when he turned 14. So this one can’t be bigger or better but it has to be a bit different. So the midsize is ideal really. I might get them bigger ones for their 21st birthdays if they’re lucky.

    1. Hello again, glad to be of service. Yes, that makes perfect sense now. Just didn't want you to have a nasty surprise. What a good dad you are, I wish my dad bought me a TAG when I was 14.
