DUEL: TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer 01 Skeleton Chronograph v Carrera Calibre 16 Titanium Chronograph

CAR2A1Z.FT6044                       CV2A80.FC6256

Hello readers, hard to believe I know for one so soft of skin and lithe of body🤣, but today is in fact my 55th birthday! Yay. Cake!!! And so I thought perhaps I would take a break from all these incessant new release posts and instead do what I really like doing. So today I will be writing about two of my most luxurious watches; my original 2016 Heuer 01 Skeleton and the titanium cased Calibre 16 day date Carrera I got from the Bicester Village outlet for my 50th birthday.

Now this post has in fact been in the works since late 2021, I even had some text written and pictures taken... but as three years have passed (!) I decided it would be much better to just start from scratch. I even briefly pondered the idea of switching out the Calibre 16 Carrera for my recently purchased Grand Carrera Calibre 36 for a true 'Clash of the Titans' post... but on reflection I decided that perhaps comparing my long time 'favourite' watch with the watch I am currently 'infatuated' with was a bit unfair. I mean maybe in time the GC Caliper will emerge as my 'favourite' watch, but it's far too soon to be throwing claims like that around.

HISTORY: TAG Heuer Titanium (1983-1988)

The 'Titanium' was a very short lived and very '1980s' watch (both literally and figuratively). It was introduced in 1983 (first appearing in the 1984 Heuer catalogue) and had its last appearance in the 1987/88 TAG Heuer catalogue. As such it is another one of those odd watches that can be had with either a 'Heuer' or 'TAG Heuer' branded dial and there's a good chance that even if you get a TAG Heuer dial the backplate and clasp might well still be stamped with the old 'Heuer' logo... that's just how it was in the 1980s kids!

I find some of the 'Titanium' designs appealing, but others markedly less so. I actually remember looking longingly at a 220.206 on eBay for quite some time, to the point where I went to the trouble of enquiring if TAG Heuer had any spare links should I need to extend the bracelet. Unfortunately the response I got was that they wouldn't sell links for watches of that age and it would have to be returned to them to be 'worked on'. As you might imagine, hearing that I thought better of it and turned my attention to something else. A shame really as the 220.206 is a cool looking watch and would have been a nice addition to my collection... but no way was I putting myself in that position.

Okay, well clearly this isn't going to be another super-long 'History of' post because there are only eight models in total (and only eleven variants of those). Needless to say I'm still working on the rest of the Carrera posts and they will be along in good time.

ON THE WRIST: TAG Heuer Aquaracer 'Watches of Switzerland' Calibre 5 Limited Edition

WBP208D.BF0631

WATCHES OF SWITZERLAND / Regent Street, London, 5th September 2023

With just over ten weeks remaining of 2023, it seems timely to remind ourselves that last year a 'Watches of Switzerland' limited edition Carrera 'Panda' (CBN2018) managed to snag the much coveted 'C.O.C.O. Watch of the Year' for 2022 - joining previous winners the CBK221B Silver 160th Carrera and the CBK221D Dato 45 at the top of the C.O.C.O. tree.

Now, obviously I'm not for a moment suggesting that this 'Watches of Switzerland' limited edition Aquaracer is about to repeat that feat, because frankly we all know there's only one watch in the running this year... the CBK221H 39mm Glassbox Panda. The watch that not only heralded the start of TAG Heuer's 60th Anniversary celebrations for the Carrera of course, but also the one most likely to blame for the six-eight months it took W.O.S. to sell a measly 250 pieces of what was and remains a very nice watch!

Honestly I still think TAG Heuer well and truly stitched W.O.S. up there, releasing a 42mm Panda when they knew there was a more desirable 39mm one coming (and let's not pretend we didn't know about it too). But hey, it's water under the bridge now... and as far as I know the W.O.S. Panda is now sold out - so all's well that ends well.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Heuer Monaco Calibre 11 'Monaco Boutique' Limited Edition

Can you think of a better place to buy your Monaco from than the TAG Heuer boutique in Monaco? Well if you happened to have been there recently then you might just have seen one of these, a grade 5 titanium 'SMQ' with gold subdials, hands and indices. The watch is limited to just 50 individually numbered pieces and comes with 2 straps in a special box... and I should hope so given the asking price is an eye-watering €11,000!

ON THE WRIST: TAG Heuer Monaco Heuer 02 Skeleton Chronograph

CBL2183.FT6236

TAG Heuer Boutique / Oxford Street, London 20th June 2023

When I wrote my 'First Impressions' post for the new skeleton-dial Monacos back in June it was hard not to lead with the prices TAG Heuer was asking for the first 'widely available' examples they had ever produced. Two months down the line and it feels like the buzz for these models has died pretty quickly, probably because we've got a new 'limited edition' Monaco in our faces already.

I must admit I was hoping to see the black DLC/turquoise model, but of course the boutique only had the other two in stock, so that was perhaps getting me off on the wrong foot, but again I found myself rather alarmingly disinterested in the watch on my wrist - which is probably partly why it's taken so long for me to write this post.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: TAG Heuer Aquaracer 'Solargraph' Titanium Solar Powered Watch

WBP1180.BF0000

It seems slightly bizarre to me that while the original black Solargraph was announced last March and supposedly launched last September I am still yet to see one* and here we are in the middle of January 2023 talking about a new version of TAG Heuer's first solar powered Aquaracer. TAG Heuer have certainly taken a completely different approach to this one, creating quite a different aesthetic compared to the original. This time we're working with titanium and once again like the previous Ti Aquaracers the watch has a sandblasted finish which is quite attractive (though I have heard mutterings that it's the cheapest way to finish a titianium watch on the THF Forum).

*I actually got to see both Solargraphs a few days after writing this post.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: TAG Heuer x Mario Kart Formula 1 Calibre 16 and Tourbillon Limited Edition Chronographs

CAZ201E.FC6517                                    CAZ5080.FC6517

Oh Lord. Where to begin with this pair? Okay, cards on the table here... I think I played a Super Mario game once about five years ago at a New Years Eve party, and that is pretty much my experience of the admittedly very popular gaming franchise. As such, I really have zero investment in this, I'm solely viewing this from the perspective of a watch enthusiast and not a Mario fanboi. Which is probably not ideal and in fact I posted on the 'THF Forum' asking if anyone wanted to write a guest 'First Impressions' post for these because I felt it might be better written by someone who understood where TAG Heuer were coming from with these watches. Alas, no one volunteered, so I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and do it myself... though I can't honestly say I'm looking forward to it.

ON THE WRIST: TAG Heuer Aquaracer Calibre 5 'Titanium' Watch

WBP208B.BF0631

TAG Heuer Boutique / Meadowhall, Sheffield, 16th June 2022

It's been a little over a year since my first encounter with the WBP208B: back then of course we were still between bouts of 'Covid-lockdown' so it was an absolute treat to be able to go outside and look in the shops (albeit you had to stand outside and wait to be welcomed in past the velvet rope, which contrary to popular belief doesn't 'add to the experience' like you might think it would!).

Back then I tried on this one, a new blue-dial Aquaracer I believe and I also had a look at the 36mm version with the silver dial. This was my favourite of the three, but even then it wasn't something that I was considering purchasing. For one thing, while I kind of like the green aesthetic, it is a very particular green, a very 'military' green if you like and not something that massively appeals to me. If I was going to buy a green watch I would want it to be much brighter, the original Aquaracer WAY2015 springs to mind - but of course they are sold out and now there are fakes everywhere... so that's out the window.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: TAG Heuer / Bamford Calibre 5 'Aquaradar' Limited Edition

WAY208F.BA0638

It's fair to say that Bamford's unique take on our favourite watch brand has produced some hit and miss results thus far. On the upside the carbon Monaco was pretty darned cool, the coffee-dial Carrera was cute and quirky and they've also made a stunning Monza with yellow highlights... but against all that there are some pretty nauseating Bamfordized Monacos about and of course the watch I absolutely love to hate - the Bamford Carrera Basketball (or whatever the hell they call it).

Oh my God, I hate that watch so much I can't even begin to explain. In fact if I need to explain why it's horrible then please take yourself off somewhere and have your taste level checked. Even if they had moved the text so that it wasn't on top of the black lines it would have been something, but no... they couldn't even be arsed to do that. And why does the date window look so shonky? Aside from the fact that it's just floating in the middle of the dial I... mean, it actually looks kinda melted!

But let's forget about that, because that was a 'Bamford' and this new watch is a TAG Heuer / Bamford with a proper TAG Heuer part number, just like the carbon Monaco, and that, let's not forget, was pretty darned cool.

So what do we have here then, well... principally we have a Calibre 5 Aquaracer (although TAG Heuer are doing their best to confuse us by having a 'ticking' animation on their website!) made entirely of grade 2 titanium, including the bracelet, so this should be nice and light on the wrist despite the 43mm diameter.

The theme is 'radar*' and I must say I really do like the dial, it's not completely original, we've seen Bell and Ross watches in a similar vein, but it's certainly a first for TAG Heuer and I think on the whole they've done a nice job.

Titanium has a unusual look to it and in this live photo (kindly supplied by C11 Forum member Abrod520) it almost resembles the sand blasted finish on my old 4000 Series, but it does give the watch a definite 'look' that sets it apart from the rank and file Aquaracers you'll find in your local Goldsmiths. The only downside though is that titanium scratches up and this particular grade of titanium more than most apparently, although I'm told a pencil eraser will make it as good as new again. I wouldn't know about that since my titanium Carrera is still scratch free, but my clumsy Tudor Pelagos LHD owning friend Rich tells me it definitely works. Good to know!

This one also reminds me of my steel 3000, which is probably why I'm feeling rather drawn to it. Indeed, I've long been asking for an up-to-date, 'man-sized' 3000 and this isn't a million miles away from that. The only problem there is that if I bought this would I still need my beloved 3000s?

Mmmm, that's a downside I hadn't considered until now... but maybe it's different enough? After all, the 3000 doesn't have orange rimmed hands, a stripey second hand, a cyclops or a funky 'radar' themed dial...

I also like the orange dashes around the edge of the dial and that triangular orange marker on the bezel looks particularly 'retro' - it's not lumed though, which is a shame.

So, as you might imagine, this costs a little more than the regular Calibre 5 Aquaracers... what with it being titanium and a Bamford limited edition. It's not the rarest of limited editions though, as there will be 1500 of these... but I'm not unhappy about that to be honest, as it increases the chances of actually getting to see one before they all get snaffled up. Also, that's probably enough to dissuade the flippers and that has to be a good thing!

When I first found it on the TAG Heuer USA website the price was in dollars and it suggested a retail price of just under £3000, but now it has made it onto the UK website it's showing as £3250, so a little bit more than I thought, but still not completely outrageous.

Word on the street is that this is the last of the current 'Aquaracers' as a new line will be launched in 2021. I'm guessing, since they've 'announced' that to the world, it's probably coming sooner rather than later, so I'm excited to see what they have in store for us next year.

I do like this one, and I'd love to get a chance to 'see one', but while I think it looks great, it worries me that it's titanium and that it scratches easily. I've managed to keep my Carrera unscathed, but only because I rarely wear it. I don't really want to buy another watch that I'm scared to wear, especially one which is more of a sporty model.... although, you never know, I might well be seduced if I actually get to see one in the flesh.

*Radar? Or maybe 'Sonar'. Given that it's a dive watch, Sonar would make more sense I guess!
