ON THE WRIST: TAG Heuer Carrera 'Porsche 963' Calibre TH20-00 Limited Edition Chronograph

TAG Heuer Boutique / Meadowhall, Sheffield, 30th November 2024

Way back in September last year (IIRC) I visited the TAG Heuer boutique in Sheffield's Meadowhall Centre only to find I'd missed the Carrera Extreme Sports Porsche 963 by a mere 48 hours. So I was pleasantly surprised to find it had come back into stock on my last visit... especially as we know it is limited to just 963 pieces worldwide.

As I've mentioned previously, I find myself rather perturbed by this new Carrera line. On the face of it the daring, avant garde designs should be right up my alley, but somehow I find them a little hard to warm to. At least partly to blame are the strange looking rubber straps, with this faux integrated look that while admittedly practical, also feels very 'faux' indeed.

But even so, I have to admit that I do rather like this one over all the other Extreme Sports that I've seen. For a start I prefer the skeletonization on this one as the 'steering wheel' behind the TAG Heuer shield fills up the space nicely and stops it looking empty. The Porsche engraving on the side of the case is very cool too, which reminds me I really must do a post about all these Porsche watches, there must be getting on for a dozen of them available now!

So yes, it's a pretty cool watch but I can't honestly say that I 'want' one. First off, at £8050 it's too expensive, but even if it was, say, £6000 I still don't think I'd want one. I'm by no means a Porsche enthusiast and so wearing any 'Porsche' themed watch feels a bit poserish to me. I mean I don't think you necessarily have to actually own a Porsche to buy one, but I think you should at least have a passing interest in the marque. But even if we overlook that I can readily think of three or four previous TAG Heuer x Porsche models that I'd be more excited about owning.

Still it was nice to see this in person and confirm that it is my favourite Extreme Sports Carrera so far, I tried a few more watches on during this visit so there's a few more 'On the Wrist' posts to come, plus I expect we'll see the first new 2025 TAG Heuer in the next few weeks (TAG Heuer have already teased what appears to be the new 'classic' Formula 1 on their social media accounts).

In the meantime I guess I will go and make a start on writing a post about all the TAG Heuer x Porsche models we've seen in the past few years!

  1. Decent attempt by TAG Heuer, at around $4000 I think these would be a major hit
