Another day, another catalogue... it just never stops. A pretty straightforward transaction here, I made the only bid and won this 34 page 200mm square catalogue for just £7.99. A complete and utter bargain I'm sure you will agree. Not only that, but the seller also included the accompanying price list which is always a bonus..
Four of my watches are featured in this catalogue and price list and I find it quite fascinating to find out how much these watches were new. I've used an online inflation calculator to give you the prices in today's money, alongside the original price and the prices I paid for comparison.
TAG Heuer 4000 Series Grey Dial Quartz Watch WF1111.BA0511
1996 List price £745
2019 Price (adjusted for inflation) £1340
Price I paid £325
TAG Heuer S/EL Black Dial Quartz Chronograph CG1110.BA0473
1996 List price £1325
2019 Price (adjusted for inflation) £2385
Price I paid £390
TAG Heuer S/EL White Dial Two Tone Quartz Chronograph CG1120.BB0424
1996 List price £1625
2019 Price (adjusted for inflation) £2925
Price I paid £485
TAG Heuer 6000 Series Quartz Watch WH1115.BA0675
1996 List price £1325
2019 Price (Adjusted for inflation) £2385
Price I paid £349
I guess it's slightly unfair to compare, but I really don't think I would be paying those 2019 prices for these watches... and nor would anyone else. Let's not forget that all these watches are quartz powered, and while the S/EL and 6000 Series were high end watches in their day, I don't think upwards of £2000 would be a reasonable price to pay for either of them.
Still, it's interesting to compare and also it makes you wonder whether watch prices have rocketed quite as much as we're led to believe?
